Municipality of Cedros

It is a municipality in the department of Francisco Morazán, in the Republic of Honduras.

It is a very ancient town, and there is a record of a document dated April 15, 1547, written in Agalteca, a village within that municipality. The document refers to the acquisition of land in the Siria Valley by General Alonzo de Cáceres Guzmán. Its settlement increased due to the mining boom in the 18th century, and it was called «Real de Minas de San José de los Cedros,» associated with the curate of Cantarranas.

On August 29, 1824, the first Constituent Congress of the State of Honduras met in Cedros. In 1849, an ordinary congress was held in the same city under the presidency of Lic. Felipe Jáuregui, and it was then that Tegucigalpa was definitively decreed as the capital of the State.
