Municipality of Corquin

Corquín is a municipality in the department of Copán in Honduras.

Corquín, which means «Between Rivers» in the Toltec language, is named so due to its geographical location between the Julalgua and Aruco rivers.

Historical Data

The first settlers of Corquín were descendants of the Nahua or Toltec people who settled on the banks of the Jopopo River. They later established themselves on the banks of the Julalgua River and finally in the lands between the Julalgua River and the San Francisco ravine in the late 17th century. The current town is located in this latter site, which was a small village that was part of the curate of Sensenti according to the population census of 1791. Documents in its archives indicate that it was elevated to the status of municipality in 1824 under the administration of General Manuel José Arce y Fagoaga, the Central American federal president. The first municipal mayor was Victoriano Fuentes.

In the 1889 Political Division, Corquín was already a municipality of the Cucuyagua Circle. It is located in the angle formed by the departments of Ocotepeque and Gracias. On March 11, 1926, according to Decree No. 69, the National Congress elevated the population of Corquín in the Department of Copán to the status of a city.
