Municipality of Guajiquiro

The municipality of Guajiquiro belongs to the Department of La Paz.

In 1582, it appears as an indigenous town with the name Guasequiro, belonging to the city of Comayagua, with 25 tributaries entrusted to Licenciado Ortiz. In the population census of 1801, it is listed as an indigenous town of the parish of Comayagua. The municipality status was granted in 1870, as recorded in Vallejo’s statistical yearbook.

General Information about Guajiquiro

Origin of its name: In Mesoamerican language, it means «river of guaje trees.» Among the inhabitants, the meanings «Trimbilla de Agua» and «Hombre de Agua» are also used. The original Lenca name was Guaxerique, which means «Basket of Water.»

Main Economic Activity

Cultivation of basic grains, coffee, sugarcane, potatoes, blackberries, grapes, and vegetables; raising of cattle, horses, sheep, and pigs; poultry farming.

Location

Surrounded by hills and located at the foot of the Guajiquirito mountain in a small plain.
