City and Municipality of Danli

It is a municipality in the Department of El Paraíso, in the Republic of Honduras.

It was founded in 1667 with the name San Buenaventura during the conquest process. A church was built there to catechize the indigenous population. In 1791, it is listed as the head of the curacy, and in 1794, its territory was delimited.

In the territorial division of 1825, it appears as a parish of the Olancho district. When the department of El Paraíso was created in 1869, it became part of it. Due to its geographical location, it is known as «The City of Hills.»

It received the title of city on April 12, 1843 when this municipality belonged to the department of Olancho.

Origin of its name: It means «water of sand» in Mesoamerican language.

Main Economic Activity

Cultivation of basic grains, sugarcane, coffee, tobacco, and vegetables; breeding of cattle, horses, sheep, and pigs; poultry farming.

Location

Surrounded by the Dipilto Range, the Agua Fría mountain, and the Jamastrán Valley.

Limits

  • North: municipalities of Juticalpa and Patuca (both in Olancho);
  • South: municipality of El Paraíso and Republic of Nicaragua;
  • East: municipality of Trojes and Republic of Nicaragua;
  • West: municipalities of Jacaleapa, Teupasenti, and San Matías.
