Municipality of Esquipulas del Norte

Esquipulas del Norte is a municipality in the Olancho Department of Honduras.

It is named in honor of the Patron Saint of the town, the Lord of Esquipulas. Its original name was Azacualpa, which means «In the Pyramid» in Mexican.

Location

The municipality is bordered to the north by the municipality of Olanchito, to the south by the municipality of Jano, to the east by the municipality of Guata, and to the west by the municipality of La Unión.

Historical Facts

It was originally an Aldea (village) of Azacualpa belonging to the Municipality of Jano. On January 31, 1896, it was granted the status of a municipality but with the same name as the village. Later, the name was changed to its current name, although the exact date of the change is unknown.
