Wildlife in Honduras
Thanks to the fact that forests cover about 41% of the territory, the fauna in Honduras is very rich and varied, the most common being those of arboreal life and those that live in the river currents of lake waters.
Large animals are not very numerous but there are hundreds of species of reptiles, amphibians and birds; lizards and many varieties of fish in the streams. Monkeys, bats, and myriads of birds abound in the trees.

Insects
Honduras, being in a tropical region, does not suffer from cold seasons, so thousands of varieties of insects swarm continuously: wasps, ants, mosquitoes, mosquitoes, gnats, among others.
Mammals
Mammals include: “Danto” or Tapir (Tapirus bairdii), wild boar or Peccary (Tayassu pecari), Jagüilla (Sus americanensis), Jaguar (Felis onca), Puma (Felis concolor), Tigrillo or Ocelot (Felis pardalis), Wildcat or Caucel (Felis Wiedii), Yaguarundi or small puma (Felis yaguaroundi), Bat (Vampirus spectrum), Pizote solo (Nasua narica), Raccoon (Procyon lotor), Anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla) and many more.
Birds
The Avifauna is varied and very abundant with more than 800 species registered between Endemic and transitory among which are: hummingbirds or sparrows in more than 20 different species; the Honduran Emerald Hummingbird (Amazilia luciae), the Scarlet Macaw (Ara macao), the widow (Trogon rufus), the woodpecker (Phleoceastes guatemalensis), the barn owl (Pulstrix perspicillata), the owl (Ciccaba virgata), the Toucan razor (Rhanfastus sulfuratus and Pteroglosus torcuatus), yellow-naped parrot (Amazona ochrocephala), coastal green parakeet (Aratinga finschi), king vulture or Central American condor (Sarcoramphus papa), Eumops glaucinus.
Reptiles
Among the reptiles are the yellow beard (Botrox atrox), tamagás (Botrox nasuta), Porthidium nasutum, boa (Constrictor imperatur), rattlesnake (Crotalus durissus), green turtle (Chelonia mydas), brown caiman (Caiman cocodrylus fuscus), lizard ( Cocodrylus acutus), coral snake, Acanthopleura granulata, Basiliscus vittatus.
Other reptiles are the iguanas that blend in with the varied tones of the forest; freshwater turtles such as the loggerhead (Caretta caretta) and among amphibians, toads and climbing frogs of various species are abundant.
The pink boa also known as boa constrictor imperator which is another endemic species of Honduras and you can find it in Cayos Cochinos.
Marine Fauna
The coasts of Honduras are bathed to the north and east by the Caribbean Sea and in the south by the Gulf of Fonseca, in the turquoise waters near the Caribbean Sea you can see the coral reefs with their diversity of calcareous algae, algae red, (Rhodophyta), such as seagrass beds, among other aquatic plants that address a natural ecosystem.
Among the fauna that we can find on the Honduran coasts, there are the whale shark, dolphins, a variety of tropical fish, shrimp (Caridea) and many more species.
