USA extends the TPS for Honduran migrants until 2025

Washington, USA – President Biden’s government through the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has just announced the extension of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) strong>for another 18 months for Honduran migrants residing in the United States.

In addition to compatriots, thousands of immigrants from El Salvador, Nicaragua and Nepal will benefit.

Nationals will be able to extend TPS from January 6, 2024 to July 5, 2025, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

The new extension gives around 76,000 Hondurans the opportunity to re-register and confirm their benefit. The re-registration period will last 60 days, starting on November 6, 2023 and ending on January 5, 2024. Those interested may register until July 5, 2025.

It is important to take into account that only those Hondurans who already enjoyed the benefit and who arrived in the United States after December 30, 1998, that is, after the dates of continuous residence, can register.

The decision was informed by the Secretary of National Security, Alejandro Mayorkas, who assured in a statement that this 18-month extension will allow «offering security and protection to the current beneficiaries of the program.»

«Through the extension of Temporary Protected Status, we are able to offer continued security and protection to current beneficiaries who are citizens of El Salvador, Honduras, Nepal and Nicaragua who are already present in the United States and are unable to return due to the impacts environmental disasters,» Mayorkas said in the letter.

That extension must now be published in the Federal Register, explaining the eligibility criteria, deadlines, and procedures necessary for current beneficiaries to re-register for TPS and renew their Employment Authorization Documents (EADs).

With this decision, the administration of President Joe Biden abolished the orders approved by former President Donald Trump to end TPS for these four countries, thus allowing beneficiaries to re-register for another year and a half.

President Xiomara Castro, from China, expressed her gratitude to President Joe Biden for the expansion of TPS, assuring that she It will benefit thousands of Honduran families.

In her Twitter post , she also referenced the other three beneficiary countries by measure.
