Biography of Santos Rodríguez Orellana
Santos Orlando Rodríguez Orellana is a retired captain of the Honduran Armed Forces (FFAA), originally from the community of Yamaranguila in the western department of Intibucá.
In January 2021, he announced his political aspirations and in April, he presented himself to the National Electoral Council, where he requested information to register his independent candidacy for the presidency of the Republic of Honduras.
Rodríguez is a critic of President Juan Orlando Hernández Alvarado’s administration and was dishonorably discharged on October 21, 2016.
This is the first time he is participating in an elected position, with the promise to rescue Honduras from poverty, combat crime, drug trafficking, and corruption at all levels.
In April 2021, he left the country citing death threats and is currently under investigation for the murder of two individuals during an official mission in 2014 in La Mosquitia, a region in the Caribbean of the country.
He ran as a presidential candidate under the banner of the Independent Movement for Dignity and Hope (MIDE).
His presidential formula included Hernán Isaías Zelaya and Jorge Mahomar as his running mates. His candidacy was registered on June 4, 2021, with around 90,000 signatures, surpassing the requirement of 65,000 set by the National Electoral Council.
