July 14 – Honduran Pedagogue Day
Every July 14th, Honduras celebrates the Day of the Honduran Pedagogue in honor of the birth of Dr. Ramón Rosa, who was one of the greatest education reformers in Honduras.
Ramón Rosa Soto was born in Tegucigalpa on July 14, 1848. He was a prominent lawyer, journalist, politician, and liberal writer during the second half of the 19th century.
He was the ideologue behind the educational reforms of the Liberal Reform in Guatemala between 1873 and 1876, during the government of General Justo Rufino Barrios. He also played a key role in the educational reforms in Honduras during the government of his cousin, Dr. Marco Aurelio Soto, serving as the Minister General of Government.
By decree number 52 issued on July 23, 1982, during the government of President Roberto Suazo Córdova, it was decided to honor the memory of Dr. Ramón Rosa by establishing July 14th as the Day of the Honduran Pedagogue.
