June 11 – Student Day
In Honduras, June 11 is celebrated as Student’s Day, in honor of the birth of José Trinidad Reyes, who was the founder of the first public education house, the Autonomous University of Honduras.
José Trinidad Reyes was born on June 11, 1797 and was popularly known as ‘el padre Trino’. His student career was framed in reading and the Catholic faith, he obtained a bachelor’s degree in philosophy, theology and canon law in Nicaragua and later, in 1820, he was ordained as Subdeacon, at which point his life in the priesthood began.
By decree on May 28, 1922, June 11 was instituted as the date of birth of José Trinidad Reyes, who is a symbol for Honduran education.
