Municipality of El Porvenir
El Porvenir is a municipality in the department of Atlántida, in the Republic of Honduras.
The village of Juan López (now El Porvenir), which belonged to the department of Colón, was granted municipality status on April 18, 1898, during the administration of Policarpo Bonilla, due to its strong economic and population growth in the agricultural sector. It became an important port with significant commercial activity.

In the municipality of El Porvenir, there is a source of employment that many municipalities in the country would desire to have, as there are pineapple plantations owned by Stantard Fruit International that provide year-round commerce to the municipality. There are nearly 1000 employees directly benefiting from the company. This contributes to the prosperity of the municipality. El Porvenir, due to its geographical location, is rich in commerce, as there are cattle farms that distribute products within the municipality. In the La Union village, there is a casabe factory.

The municipality is located on the coastal plain of the Caribbean between the mouths of the Juan and Leán rivers.

Decree of City Establishment
Tegucigalpa, April 18, 1898.
- In view of the previous request submitted by the Executive Power, by a large number of residents of the Juan López village, currently part of the municipality of La Ceiba, requesting the establishment of the mentioned village as a municipality, and considering the report and proceedings carried out by the political governor of the Department of Colon, which are favorable to the petitioners, and considering that the Juan López village, due to its considerable number of inhabitants, the importance of the agricultural enterprises established there, and its rapid development in a short period of time, meets the conditions required by the law to become an independent municipality as it has the necessary resources, it is convenient to create the new town.
- THEREFORE: The President, in accordance with the provisions of articles 2 and 3 of the Municipal Law:
- RESOLVES 1. To establish the Juan López village as a municipality with the name of El Porvenir.
- 2. The villages of Bonito, Bonitillo, Montevideo, Zacate, Arriba, Barra de Zacate, Barra de Salado, Barra de Cuero, Salado Arriba, Jimerito, Santiago, and La Másica will be within the jurisdiction of the new town, with the same territorial limits as currently established.
- 3. The political governor of Colon will order the convening of Local Authorities Elections for the new Municipality and will give the elected officials possession of their respective positions.
- 4. Based on the general census and other statistical and geographical data provided to the Government of the Municipalities of La Ceiba and El Porvenir, the executive authority may modify the provisional jurisdictional demarcation between the two municipalities.
- 5. The municipality of La Ceiba has the right to complete its land boundaries, which will be included in the new town, from the Bonito River to the Coloradito River. The municipality of El Porvenir may also request its land boundaries, taking into account the proximity to La Ceiba’s corresponding boundaries. NOTIFY (F) BONILLA. Tourist Places
El Porvenir has many natural treasures that make it a municipality enjoyed by national and international tourists. In a short time, visitors can enjoy a walk through the trails of the Pico Bonito National Park and then visit the white sandy beaches that El Porvenir has to offer. Due to advertising reasons, the tourist places in El Porvenir are sometimes listed as being located in La Ceiba, but the local residents know that the Pico Bonito National Park, with its peak Cuspide, is in front of El Porvenir, as well as the Cuero y Salado Wildlife Refuge, which is located to the east of the municipality.
Sports
El Porvenir is a municipality rich in producing athletes, as some residents stand out at the national and international level in different disciplines. Wilmer Crisanto and Felix Crisanto are examples who bring prominence to the municipality. In cycling, Carlos Johnson and his brother Daniel Johnson excel.
