Municipality of Puerto Lempira
It is a municipality in the department of Gracias a Dios, in the Republic of Honduras.
The history of this municipality is closely tied to that of the Department, which was created during the provisional government of the military junta in 1957, when it became a departmental district and later the departmental headquarters.
General Information about Puerto Lempira
Origin of its name: It was initially known as AUYA YARI, which means «Big Beach» in Miskito. The current name is a combination of «Puerto» (Port) and the legendary character who resisted the Spanish in the western region, «Lempira».
