Municipality of Tocoa

The municipality of Tocoa belongs to the department of Colón.

Tocoa appeared in 1582 as a town entrusted to Miguel de Salas with 45 tributaries. It was later populated by agricultural immigrants from the departments of Olancho and El Paraíso.

On June 11, 1882, it was elevated to the rank of municipality during the administration of Marco Aurelio Soto. In the 1887 census, it was part of the Sonaguera district. It was granted city status on July 29, 1987, during the administration of José Simón Azcona.

Origin of its name: Derived from the demonym of Tocuacan, a place with green and tender corn ears.

Principal economic activity

Cultivation of bananas, plantains, citrus fruits, basic grains, sugarcane, fruits, vegetables, and tubers; breeding of cattle, pigs, horses, sheep, and goats; poultry farming; tannery and carpentry; hunting and fishing.

Location

It is located in the Aguán River Valley and is crossed by the Tocoa River.
