Municipality of Wampusirpe

It is a municipality in the department of Gracias a Dios, in the Republic of Honduras.

Originally, it was a settlement in La Mosquitia, located near the Wanpú and Patuca rivers. It was granted municipal status in 1996, during the liberal government of Dr. Carlos Roberto Reina.

Origin of its name: Its name in the Misquito language means «small ravine.»

Main Economic Activity

  • Cultivation of basic grains (maize on a small scale), cocoa, and tubers; raising of cattle and pigs; poultry farming.

Infrastructure

  • Health: 3 CESAR and 1 CMI
  • Education: 21 primary education centers, 19 pre-primary education centers, 1 secondary education center, and 1 Basic Bilingual Education Center (CCEB).

Location

It is located in the southeastern part of the department, irrigated by the Patuca River.

  • North: Municipality of Brus Laguna
  • South: Republic of Nicaragua
  • East: Municipalities of Ahuas and Puerto Lempira
  • West: Municipalities of Iriona (Colón) and Dulce Nombre de Culmí (Olancho)
