July 14 – Honduran Day

In memory of the anniversary of the conflict between El Salvador and Honduras in 1969, known as the «Football War,» the Day of Honduran Identity is celebrated every July 14th.

The Football War, also known as the Hundred Hour War and in El Salvador as the War of Legitimate Defense, took place between July 14th and 18th, 1969.

The conflict earned its name due to the coincidence with a football match on June 26th, 1969, between the national teams of El Salvador and Honduras, as part of the qualification for the 1970 FIFA World Cup.

The name was coined by Polish reporter Ryszard Kapuściński and Jamaican reporter Bob Dickens, who were unaware of the actual causes that led to the conflict between the two Central American republics.

During this war, the political tensions that led to the armed conflict between Honduras and El Salvador became evident. It was a brief war lasting only four days, and both sides used notably outdated combat aircraft for that time.
