Municipality of Jutiapa

The municipality of Jutiapa belongs to the department of Atlántida.

Jutiapa previously belonged to the municipality of Balfate in the department of Colón. Later, in 1906, it was called Nueva Armenia.

Its commercial development thrived due to its proximity to the city of La Ceiba. On April 12, 1923, the municipal seat was relocated to the village of Jutiapa.

Origin of its name: It means «river of the Jutes.»

Main Economic Activity

Cultivation of African palm, banana, plantain, citrus fruits, cocoa, basic grains, sugarcane, coffee, and sweet potatoes; raising of cattle (bovine, porcine, and equine); rabbit farming and poultry farming.

Infrastructure:

  • Health: 6 CESAR (Rural Health Centers) and 1 CESAMO (Departmental Hospital)
  • Education: 50 community centers for preschool education, 8 centers for basic education, 15 centers for in-person secondary education, 94 primary education centers, and 46 kindergartens
  • Communication Network: Internet, postal services, and paved roads

Location

It is located at the easternmost point of the Caribbean coastal plain in the department of Atlántida, at the foot of Cerro Jutiapa, and is crossed by the Papaloteca and Jutiapa rivers.

  • East: Municipalities of Balfate and Sonaguera (both in Colón)
