Municipality of Sonaguera

The municipality of Sonaguera belongs to the department of Colón.

In ancient times, it served as a resting stop for people traveling on foot or by mule towards the interior of the Colón department, the center-east, and the west of the country. People would leave Trujillo, crossing a steep mountain through a rocky path known as the «culebrina.» At that time, the area now occupied by the Sonaguera municipality was known as the «war zone» because battles took place there between native people, black slaves, and Peninsular Spaniards. It was inhabited by an ethnic group with tan skin and curly hair.
