Capiro and Calentura National Park

It is located on the south side of the city of Trujillo, department of Colón. The area of this National Park is approximately 62 km2 with a core area of 49.4 km2.

The highest point of Cerro Calentura is 1,235 meters above sea level and has an impressive view over the Bay of Trujillo where you can see the city of the same name, the Guaimoreto lagoon, Punta Castilla, Punta Betulia and the Garífuna communities of San Antonio and Santa Fe.

Capiro and Calentura are the termination of the Nombre de Dios Mountain Range and their respective altitudes are 667 meters above sea level, and 1235 meters above sea level. It is a tropical humid forest, its importance is based on the fact that it is the only source of water for the city of Puerto de Trujillo and surrounding communities.

In addition to its value as a refuge for Flora and Fauna and its importance in increasing the tourist attraction of the area, we have in these hills a wealth of remarkable pre-Columbian and colonial archaeological remains. Several caves and portions of the paved road used by the indigenous people for their communication in the interior of Honduras are mentioned in these mountains.

The Capiro Calentura National Park is managed by the Foundation for the Conservation of the Capiro-Calentura National Park and the Wildlife Refuge, “Laguna de Guaimoreto” (FUCAGUA).
