Biography of Julio López Casaca
Julio López Casaca was born in San Nicolás de Copán on November 13, 1964. He is a lawyer with 30 years of professional experience, 27 of which have been dedicated to advocating for indigenous peoples and Afro-Hondurans in defense of ILO Convention 169.
He pursued higher studies at the National Autonomous University of Honduras (UNAH) and is also a graduate of the Latin American Workers’ University in Caracas, Venezuela.
Among the positions he has held, he served as the legally mandated secretary for Indigenous Peoples and Afro-Hondurans in the government of former President Porfirio Lobo Sosa.
He was a legal advisor for the Garifuna Culture Center of Honduras and a specialist consultant in indigenous law for the Program for the Development of Autonomous Peoples of the Ministry of Justice, Governance, and Decentralization. He has also served as a board member of the Bar Association of Honduras (CAH).
He has acted as legal representative for the Confederation of Indigenous Peoples of Honduras and the Advisory Council for the Development of Indigenous Peoples.
The presidential candidate has also been a leader in labor organizations.
He has also worked towards combating corruption, strengthening education, and promoting human rights.
