Oh, Elusive Homeland!

By: Ángela Valle

With a loving hand, I touch your body,
Oh, elusive sweet homeland.
You are lovingly reclined
upon my heart, and my solitary song
enlivens your love.

Elusive homeland. Sweet native land,
fragrant of my sweet home.
Let me caress you on the moss
and behold your form against the
singular, rugged sky, oh, elusive homeland,
I call you amidst the sad early morning crowd,
cruel, semi-wild,
linked to pain and tortillas
among the cornfield.

And the laborers whom the boss humiliates
proclaimed you in the light of the word,
amidst the toil of your simple people,
in the open books and classrooms.
