September 17 – Honduran Teacher’s Day
In 1923, it was agreed to establish September 17th as Teacher’s Day in Honduras in honor of the national hero José Trinidad Reyes, founder of the National Autonomous University of Honduras (UNAH).
The purpose of this celebration is to dedicate a day to teachers, professors, educators, and individuals who make teaching their regular occupation. The commemoration of teachers varies among different Latin American countries.
On October 5th, 1994, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) established World Teachers’ Day, commemorating the anniversary of the signing of the UNESCO/ILO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers in 1966.
This document emphasizes that teachers are the driving force behind equity, access, and quality in education. A call for teachers signifies a call for quality education for all.
The document states that quality education provides hope and holds the promise of better livelihoods. There is no stronger foundation for lasting peace and sustainable development than quality education, delivered by competent, esteemed, supported, and motivated teachers.
