Municipality of Cabañas

Cabañas is a municipality in the department of Copán in Honduras.

It is named after the Meritorious General José Trinidad Cabañas.

This municipality is located in the western part of the department, on the left bank of the Gila River. It was originally the village of Santa Bárbara (under the jurisdiction of Santa Rita), but when the municipality was organized, it was officially named Cabañas on August 2, 1901, by executive agreement.

Location

The municipality is bordered to the north by the municipality of Santa Rita, to the south by the municipalities of San Fernando and San Jorge, to the east by the municipality of La Unión, and to the west by the municipality of Copán Ruinas. It is situated in the western part of the department, with its seat located on the left bank of the Gila River.
