Municipality of Dulce Nombre

Dulce Nombre is a municipality in the department of Copán in Honduras.

This town originated from the settlement of a family that came from El Salvador, in a place called «Las Cáscaras,» located south of the current town. Later, it was relocated to its current location. In the 1887 population census, it appeared as a village of Santa Rosa, and in 1907, it became a municipality.

Location

The municipality borders Dolores to the north and east, Santa Rosa de Copán to the south, and Concepción to the west. It is situated in the western part, with its headquarters in the center of the municipality. The terrain is quite rugged and crossed by two streams, Manzano and Copante.

Villages

The municipality includes the following seven villages:

  • Dulce Nombre (municipal seat)
  • Agua Buena
  • El Limón
  • El Prado de La Cruz
  • El Zapote
  • Las Caleras or El Horno
  • San Jerónimo

Economy

The local economy is based on agricultural activities such as growing basic grains, vegetables, legumes, etc., and all types of livestock farming. Coffee cultivation is a profitable aspect, with the production being processed and sold to mills for export. Artisanal cigar making from tobacco cultivation is also an important factor. Another significant aspect is the presence of carpentry workshops that produce furniture, coffins, and caskets of various types.
