Municipality of Guata

Guata is a municipality in the Olancho Department of Honduras.

The word «guata» means «abundance of vegetable soil» in Mexican.

Guata is one of the oldest municipalities in the Olancho department. It was founded in the mid-1777 and became a municipality in 1814. It obtained its ejidos (common lands) in 1843. In the population census of 1791, it was part of the curato of Silca. In the 1889 Territorial Political Division, it was one of the municipalities in the Manto District.

Location

It is located in the northwest of the Olancho department. The municipality borders Esquipulas del Norte and Olanchito to the north, Manto to the south, Gualaco to the east, and Jano and Esquipulas del Norte to the west. The municipal seat is situated in the center of the river valley of the Mame River.

The municipality of Guata currently has a population of over 12,500 inhabitants.
