Municipality of La Jigua
La Jigua is a municipality in the department of Copán in Honduras.
According to some local residents, the origin of its name dates back to 1729 when it was known as «Santiago de los Caballeros de Xiguat,» with the word Xihuacan meaning «Place that possesses turquoises.»
In the population census of 1791, it was already listed as La Jigua, a village within the curate of Quezailica. When the Municipality of Florida was created in 1836, it became part of its jurisdiction until 1965 when it was granted the status of a municipality under Government Agreement No. 190, dated July 13, 1965, during the presidency of General Oswaldo López Arellano.
Location
The municipality borders Florida to the north and west, San Nicolás to the south, and Nueva Arcadia to the east.
