Municipality of Lepaterique

It is a municipality in the department of Francisco Morazán, in the Republic of Honduras.

It is an ancient town. In the population census of 1791, it was a town within the curate of Ojojona, and in the political division of 1889, it was one of the municipalities in the district of Sabanagrande. However, on October 16, 1913, this municipality was segregated from its district and annexed to Tegucigalpa.

Origin of its name: In the Mesoamerican language, it means «tiger hill.»

  • Elevation: 1,147 meters above sea level.
  • Clima: Rainy with a very dry winter.

Principal Economic Activity

Cultivation of basic grains, sugarcane, tobacco, coffee, and vegetables; raising of cattle, horses, pigs, goats, and sheep; poultry farming.

Location

Surrounded by mountains and located in an extensive plain.

Limits

  • North: Municipalities of Lamaní and Villa de San Antonio (both in Comayagua);
  • South: Municipalities of Reitoca and Curarén;
  • East: Municipalities of Ojojona and Distrito Central;
  • West: Municipalities of Aguánqueterique (La Paz) and Lamaní (Comayagua).
