Municipality of Mercedes
Mercedes is a municipality in the Ocotepeque Department in Honduras. The name of the locality was given in honor of its patron saint, the Virgin of Mercedes.
In 1868, several locals purchased lands from the heiress Jerónima Castejón. In the population census of 1887, it appeared as an Aldea (village) of San Marcos. On November 11, 1889, it was given the status of Municipality, and in the Political Territorial Division of 1896, it was one of the municipalities forming the Sensenti District, belonging to Copán.
Location
The municipality borders San Marcos to the north, the Republic of El Salvador to the south, Cololaca to the east, and Sinuapa and the Republic of El Salvador to the west. It is situated in the southern part of the Ocotepeque department, at a high altitude.

Economy
The municipality’s economic base is centered around coffee production, livestock, basic grains, and some microenterprises.
