Municipality of Nuevo Celilac

Nuevo Celilac is a municipality in the department of Santa Bárbara in Honduras.

In the first population count of 1791, it was a town of the Tencoa curacy and was called Celilaca. The name in the Mexican language means «In the water of the little snails». The oldest record of the place is the «report due to the collection of the penalty of the chamber» of 1684 where it appears as the town of Sililaca of the party of Tencoa (currently the department of Santa Bárbara), then in 1791 it is also a town of the Tencoa curacy.

The inhabitants were devastated by an epidemic forcing them to migrate to another territory known as Tuliapa and they settled calling it Nuevo Celilac. In the political territorial division of 1825 it appears as a parish of the department of Santa Bárbara. According to the statistical yearbook of 1889, it was given municipal status in 1859.

Location

The municipality borders to the north and east with the municipality of San José de Colinas, to the south with the municipality of San Nicolás and to the west with the municipality of Atima.
