Municipality of Las Flores

Las Flores is a municipality in the department of Lempira in Honduras.

Its first inhabitants are originally from the La Paz department. Initially, it was called «Las Flores de Santa Bárbara» in honor of the image venerated in that place. It was granted municipal status on January 1, 1869.

Geography

The municipal center is located in a flat area, very close to the river. The vegetation changes, and broadleaf trees and dry tropical forests can be observed. The climate is hot as it is situated in a kind of valley. There are hills, but they are not very high or steep.

Boundaries

Las Flores has the following boundaries: to the north with the municipality of Lepaera; to the south with the municipality of Gracias. To the east, it also borders the municipality of Gracias; to the west with the municipality of Talgua and the Copán department.

Las Flores is located to the north of the Lempira Department, about 17 km from the city of Gracias and 30 km from the city of Santa Rosa de Copán.

Resources

The main economic activity in this municipal center is commerce, taking advantage of its location between the cities of Gracias and Santa Rosa de Copán. There are many restaurants and other businesses, mechanical workshops, etc., on the sides of the road.
Livestock farming and dairy products are in second place. The cultivation of corn and beans for local consumption is also important. The extraction of construction materials is very popular as there are two large rivers nearby, and most of the materials are sold in the city of Gracias. Obviously, it has electricity, potable water, and mobile communication.

Population

In the case of Las Flores, mestizos make up 70% of the population.

Tourism

A one-hour visit will be enough to explore the municipal center. Due to the proximity to the rivers, several swimming areas have been established. Among them, the nearest is Balneario Alejandra, and 2km away is Balneario Las 3 Jotas with hot spring pools.
Recently, hot springs were inaugurated in the upper part of the town, which are a community heritage.

There are several restaurants offering exquisite food throughout the day. During the local fair, there are rodeo activities, mechanical games, and dance parties.
