Municipality of San Jorge



San Jorge is a municipality in the Department of Ocotepeque in Honduras.

The locality was founded by a man named Jorge, originally from Esquipulas. The place was called «El Rincón de Jorge.» Once it was granted municipality status, its name was changed to San Jorge, which it is known as today.

In the population census of 1887, it was one of the municipalities forming the Sensenti District in the Copán Department. For some time, it ceased to be a municipality and became an aldea (village) of La Encarnación. However, in 1903, it regained its municipality status.

Location

The municipality borders San Fernando to the north, Fraternidad and Dolores Merendón to the south, La Encarnación and Fraternidad to the east, and the Republic of Guatemala to the west. It is situated at the foothills of the Merendón Mountain Range, in the northwest of the department.
