Municipality of San Pedro

San Pedro is a municipality in the department of Copán in Honduras.

In 1836, San Pedro was a village of Cucuyagua and was called «Llano Grande.» It was granted the status of Municipality on May 19, 1887, by Decree No. 7, during the presidency of General Luis Bográn. This act formalized the Political Governorship as a delegate of the Central Power, and its territory was separated from the Municipality of Cucuyagua on January 1, 1888.

The first municipal council session was held to inaugurate the municipality, and the first municipal officials were: José María Romero as Municipal Mayor, Pedro Romero as Councilor 1, Seferino Quezada as Syndic, Baltazar Martínez as Secretary, and Juan López, Marcos Alvarado, and Justo Umaña P. as Councilors. On January 19, 1926, the municipal seat of the Cucuyagua District was moved to San Pedro Copán.

Location

The municipality borders Cucuyagua to the north, Corquín to the south, Las Flores and Gracias to the east, and La Unión to the west. It is located in the southern part of the department, in the easternmost part of the Cucuyagua Valley, along the Catapa River.
