Municipality of Tomalá

Tomalá is a municipality in the Department of Lempira in Honduras.

It began as a small village in 1576 and, due to its marshy soil, was relocated to the foothills of a hill where it is located today. In the 1791 census, it was a town in the parish of Sensenti, and in 1889, it was one of the municipalities in the Guarita District.

Geography

Tomalá is situated on top of a mountain, at the foot of a small hill, surrounded by others covered with pines and fewer oak trees. The climate of this municipality is temperate and pleasant, and the town is only 5 minutes away from Tambla.

Boundaries

The municipality of Tomalá has the following boundaries: to the north, it borders the municipality of San Sebastián; to the south, the municipality of Tambla. To the east, it borders the municipality of San Andrés; and to the west, the municipality of Tambla.

Resources

Tomalá is another coffee-producing municipality in the department, taking advantage of its elevation above sea level. Cattle raising is the second largest economic activity, followed by the cultivation of maize and beans. The grocery trade is another activity that contributes significantly to the local economy. Like the rest of the department, Tomalá now has electricity, internet service, and mobile communication coverage.

Population

In the case of Tomalá, mestizos make up the majority of the population, accounting for 80%, with many individuals of white skin.

  • Population: In 2001, it had a population of 5,302 inhabitants. According to estimates for 2008, it is expected to have increased to 6,124 inhabitants.

Tourism

The detour to this municipality is properly signposted. To reach Tomalá, one must travel via Santa Rosa de Copán-San Marcos de Ocotepeque-Cololaca-Tambla. The journey takes approximately 2 hours. The road is currently being paved from Santa Rosa de Copán to Cololaca, so some sections are still single-lane, but from Cololaca to Tambla, the road is in very good condition, although caution must be taken due to sharp curves and possible encounters with other vehicles.
This municipality will surely please visitors, as its location conveys a sense of tranquility. Surrounded by forests and offering breathtaking views of the mountains towards «Congolón.» The festivals are lively and colorful, attracting many visitors. The church, dating back to 1904, is very well preserved.

  • Patron Saint Festival: Two festivals are celebrated: one from December 15th to 18th and the second from February 15th to 18th. These celebrations aim to express gratitude to the Virgin of Los Remedios.
