December 10 – Human Rights Day

The International Human Rights Day is celebrated every 10th of December, commemorating the day in 1948 when the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

In 1950, the Assembly passed resolution 423 (V), inviting all states and interested organizations to observe December 10th of each year as Human Rights Day.

In 2017, the day was dedicated to launching a year-long campaign to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the two international human rights covenants: the International Covenant on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights, and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, both adopted by the General Assembly on December 16, 1966.

The General Assembly proclaims the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as a common standard of achievement for all peoples and all nations, to the end that every individual and every organ of society, keeping this Declaration constantly in mind, shall strive by teaching and education to promote respect for these rights and freedoms and by progressive measures, national and international, to secure their universal and effective recognition and observance, both among the peoples of member states themselves and among the peoples of territories under their jurisdiction.
