June 1 – World Milk Day

The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) proclaimed June 1st as World Milk Day.

Many countries have been commemorating World Milk Day since June 1st, 2001, when it was first celebrated, and their number is increasing.

Data on milk production in Honduras

In Honduras, milk is part of the traditional Honduran diet, and its production ranges from 700 to 800 thousand liters per day, according to data from the VI National Milk Congress in Choluteca in 2018.

The country’s dairy sector has registered a 5 percent annual increase, with a reduction in the trade deficit of up to 70 million dollars.

The Honduran Association of Milk Processors (Ahproleche) states that per capita consumption is 136 liters per year, about 11.3 liters per month. Of these, 11 liters are fluid milk, and the rest is cheese.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) recommends a consumption of at least 190 liters of milk and its derivatives per person per year.

Figures indicate that dairy sector exports amount to around 27 million dollars, with about 12 thousand tons of fluid milk and 5,300 tons of cheese, especially to El Salvador and Guatemala.

Why celebrate June 1st as World Milk Day?

Because it provides an opportunity to focus our attention on milk and promote the related activities carried out throughout the dairy sector. Many countries have chosen to celebrate it on the same day, allowing national activities to take on a global dimension and give milk a universal profile.

Where did it start?

At the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations), which was asked to propose a date for celebrating all topics related to milk.

Why June 1st?

Many countries were already celebrating this event around June 1st. Originally, a date towards the end of May was also considered, but some countries, like China, already had a busy calendar with other commemorations. In fact, some countries have chosen dates one week before or after June 1st.
