Municipality of Maraita

It is a municipality in the department of Francisco Morazán, in the Republic of Honduras.

It was founded in 1824 as a village of Tatumbla. In the political division of 1889, it was one of the municipalities in the district of San Antonio de Oriente.

Origin of its name: In the Mesoamerican language, it means «inside the prisoners of war,» referring to the lands occupied by these prisoners.

Principal Economic Activity

Cultivation of basic grains, coffee, sugarcane, and vegetables; raising of cattle, horses, pigs, and sheep; poultry farming.

  • Education: 20 centers of basic education, 4 centers of pre-basic education, and 1 center of secondary education.
  • Communication network: All-weather road, telephone service by Hondutel, and mobile phone coverage.

Location

Located near the Azacualpa mountain, with its head irrigated by the Maraita River.

Limits

  • North: Municipalities of Tatumbla and San Antonio de Oriente;
  • South: Municipalities of Yauyupe and San Lucas (both in El Paraíso);
  • East: Municipality of Güinope (El Paraíso);
  • West: Municipalities of Santa Ana, Nueva Armenia, Distrito Central, and San Buenaventura.
