Municipality of Sinuapa
Sinuapa is a municipality in the Ocotepeque Department in Honduras.
The name Sinuapa means «In the water of the canaries» in the Mexican language, derived from Xomotl, a type of canary whose feathers were used by the indigenous people in their clothing.
According to Mth. Juan M. Castro, another possible origin of the name could be the Spanish word «sinuoso,» referring to its winding or meandering streets without a specific direction.
In the Political Territorial Division of 1889, it was a municipality in the Ocotepeque District. In 1934, according to Decree No. 48, the town of Sinuapa was temporarily designated as the Departmental Head of Ocotepeque due to the flooding of the Río Marchala, until February 14, 1936, when Nueva Ocotepeque was designated as the departmental head.
Location
The municipality borders Dolores Merendón and Fraternidad to the north, the Republic of El Salvador to the south, La Labor, San Francisco del Valle, and Mercedes to the east, and Concepción and Ocotepeque to the west. It is separated from Ocotepeque by the Sinuapa River.
