La Botija National Park
It is located 18 kilometers south of the municipality of San Marcos de Colón in Choluteca. It has an area of national forest estimated at seven square kilometers.
Its forest cover is dominated by ocote pine (Pinus oocarpa), also finding oak and oak associations; generally in a good state of preservation, except for damage caused by improper resin, forest fires and illegal cuts.
Due to its social and ecological importance, the National Congress, through Legislative Decree Number 385-2005, declared “La Montaña de La Botija” as a Protected Natural Area for Multiple Use , published in the official newspaper La Gaceta on April 26, 2006.
The decreed area has an area of 191 square kilometers. In the Mesoamerican Biological Corridor of the Pacific of Honduras , La Botija is the only area that has coniferous forest, mixed oak and oak among other associated species and small pockets of cloud forest.
