Municipality of San Marcos de Colon

It is a municipality of the Department of Choluteca, in the Republic of Honduras.

Its origins date back to 1795. According to the first statistical yearbook of 1889 by Father Ramón Vallejo, it began to develop as a village of Mineral del Corpus in 1824. In 1836, it was granted the status of a municipality during Joaquín Rivera’s administration.

General Information about San Marcos de Colón

Origin of its name: When the owners of Hacienda de Colón donated a saint for them to worship, named San Marcos Evangelista, they built a chapel. The inhabitants of this population decided to change the name from Mandaime to «San Marcos de Colón.»

Main Economic Activity

Cultivation of sugarcane, corn, sorghum, coffee, tobacco, basic grains, tubers, citrus fruits, tomatoes, avocados, and potatoes; raising of cattle (bovine, equine, porcine, and caprine); rabbit farming and poultry farming.

Location

Located in the eastern part of the department, it borders the Republic of Nicaragua. The center is located south of the San Marcos or Comalí River.

  • North: Municipalities of Mordica and Duyure;
  • South: Municipality of Concepción de María and the Republic of Nicaragua;
  • East: Republic of Nicaragua;
  • West: Municipalities of El Corpus and Apacilagua.
