March 19 – Father’s Day
The Father’s Day in Honduras is celebrated every March 19th, although it doesn’t have the same popularity as Mother’s Day. It is an ideal occasion to honor those who support the household and provide steadfast love.
Father’s Day was established in Honduras on December 5, 1959, during the government of Dr. Ramón Villeda Morales, through Legislative Agreement Number 13.
This date coincides with the feast day of Saint Joseph, the husband of the Virgin Mary and the adoptive father of Jesus. This may be the reason why countries like Spain, Portugal, Italy, Bolivia, and Uruguay join Honduras in celebrating Father’s Day on March 19th.
But it was the American Sonora Smart Dodd who originated the idea of dedicating a day each year to fathers. Although her name may not be widely known, she was the one who motivated the establishment of the celebration, recognizing the great work her father, Henry Jackson Smart, did in raising her and her five siblings. Sonora successfully established the holiday in 1909 in the United States.
