Municipality of Concepcion Intibuca

The municipality of Concepción belongs to the Intibucá Department.

According to the report by Governor Alonso de Contreras Guevara in 1582, it was originally known as Guaraxambala. In 1759, it was given municipality status, and two years later, it received the territorial title from the Captaincy General of Guatemala.

In 1867, it was renamed Zepeda and Zepeda. The town status was granted in February 1904, during the administration of Manuel Bonilla.

Origin of its name: Guaraxambala, which means «great river of the tiger.» Its current name is in honor of the Virgin of the Conception.

Location

Located in a mountainous area, close to the Puca Opalaca range.
