Municipality of San Jerónimo Copan



San Jerónimo is a municipality in the department of Copán in Honduras.

In 1887, it was listed as a village of San Antonio del Descanso. On January 28, 1919, it was granted municipality status.

Location

The municipality borders San Antonio to the north, Concepción and Dolores to the south, Trinidad de Copán to the east, and Santa Rita and El Paraíso to the west.
It is situated in the central part of the department, and its municipal seat is located in a moderately sized plain, near the central part of the municipality.

Economy

The elevation to the Municipality status of the town of San Jerónimo is as follows:

  • Considering the request submitted to the Executive Branch by Messrs. Macario García, Jesús Espinoza, Valentín Q. Paredes, and Roque López, Auxiliary Mayors of the Villages of San Jerónimo, La Esperanza, Agua Zarca, and El Tránsito, respectively, of the Municipal jurisdiction of San Antonio de Copán, Copán Department, and by J. Antonio Lemus, Rafael V. Contreras, Jesús Hernández, and Manuel M. Martínez, on behalf of the residents of the aforementioned Villages, requesting the creation of a new Municipality composed of the nominated Villages, with San Jerónimo as its seat. They base their request on the fact that the seat of the current Municipality of San Antonio is located at a long distance, has a deadly climate, and has very poor water quality. They also mention that the Village of San Jerónimo has buildings for the municipal council, a boys’ school, a girls’ school, as well as communal land suitable for raising livestock and agriculture. Lastly, they state that the represented Villages have a population of two thousand one hundred and eighty-five inhabitants, including four hundred contributing residents.
  • Having also examined the favorable report from the Political Governor of that Department and considering: That, due to the reasons expressed by the interested parties, the creation of the new Municipality is convenient to have more immediate authorities with greater means of action, who will be interested in the material and moral improvement of the mentioned district. Therefore, the Constitutional President of the Republic, in accordance with articles 2, 3, and 7 of the Municipal Law.
  • DECIDES: 1. To approve the aforementioned request, authorizing, consequently, the creation of the new municipality, which will be composed of the Villages of San Jerónimo, La Esperanza, Agua Zarca, and El Tránsito, with the first one as its seat. 2. To delegate to the Political Governor of the Department of Copán the authority to establish the jurisdictional boundaries of the new Municipality and to carry out the corresponding division of lands, water, servitude, credits, etc., and everything related to the consequent alteration of the municipal boundaries. The resolution issued in this regard must be submitted for the ratification of the Executive Branch. 3. The new Municipality shall be inaugurated on February 20 of the coming year.
