Municipality of San Pedro de Tutule

The municipality of San Pedro de Tutule belongs to the Department of La Paz.

It is the most recently created municipality in the department, established during the presidential administration of Miguel Paz Barahona. In the mid-20th century, this locality was untouched mountains, belonging to the municipality of Santa María. At that time, it was called El Zacatal. Gradually, it became populated by residents from Santa María. It was granted municipality status on March 9, 1926.

Main Economic Activity

Cultivation of basic grains, coffee, grapes, sugarcane, citrus fruits, bananas, and vegetables; cattle, horse, pig, and goat breeding; poultry farming and beekeeping.

Location

Located to the south of the department’s capital and bordering the Department of Comayagua.

Limits

  • North: municipalities of Santiago Puringla and La Paz;
  • South: municipality of Guajiquiro;
  • East: municipalities of La Paz and San Sebastián (Comayagua);
  • West: municipality of Santa María.

Hydrography: Achiote, Chaguare, and Lepaguare rivers.
