Municipality of Tambla

Tambla is a municipality in the Department of Lempira in Honduras.

Originally located in the village of El Zorrillal, the community decided to relocate it to another place due to the aridity of the land. It was then established in a location known as Pueblo Viejo.

In the 1887 population census, it was a village of Tomalá. On September 11, 1896, during the administration of President Dr. Policarpo Bonilla, the decree creating it as a municipality was issued.

Geography

To reach this municipality, one must travel via Santa Rosa de Copán-San Marcos de Ocotepeque-Cololaca-Tambla. The locality is located in the southern part of the Department of Lempira at coordinates UTM x=307682, x=1572123, at an elevation of 1150 meters above sea level. The territory is shared by two sub-basins (Mocal and Lempa). The ecological zone to which it belongs is described as «Subtropical Moist Forest, Low Montane Humid Forest, and a small part of Tropical Dry Forest».
Tambla possesses abundant natural resources such as animals, plants, scenic views, and water sources, including a large reserve area that serves to protect the water sources supplying the municipality and nearby communities. The climate is pleasant, with minimum temperatures ranging from 15°C to maximum temperatures of 30°C. There are two well-defined seasons in the year: rainy and dry.

Boundaries

The municipality of Tambla has the following boundaries: to the north, it borders the municipality of Tomalá; to the south, the municipalities of Guarita and Valladolid. To the east, it borders the municipalities of San Andrés and Tomalá; and to the west, the municipality of Guarita.

Resources

Tambla is another coffee-producing municipality in the department, taking advantage of its elevation above sea level. Cattle raising is the second largest economic activity, followed by the cultivation of maize and beans. The grocery trade is another activity that contributes significantly to the local economy. Like the rest of the department, Tambla now has electricity, internet service, and mobile communication coverage.

Population

In the case of Tambla, mestizos make up the majority of the population, accounting for 90%, with many individuals of white skin.

  • Population: In 2001, it had a population of 2,314 inhabitants. According to estimates for 2008, it is expected to have increased to 2,473 inhabitants.

Tourism

The journey to Tambla takes approximately 2 hours. The road is currently being paved from Santa Rosa de Copán to Cololaca, so some sections are still single-lane, but from Cololaca to Tambla, the road is in very good condition, although caution must be taken due to sharp curves and possible encounters with other vehicles. Tambla is located 1 km from Tomalá.
It has many attractions to offer visitors, including a very old Ceiba tree that the locals have dedicated themselves to preserve. There is also a statue with a plaque in honor of the indigenous chief Lempira. The landscapes in this municipality are spectacular, and the inhabitants are very friendly.

  • Patron Saint Festival: December 8th, the day of the Immaculate Conception, and October 4th, the day of St. Francis of Assisi.
