Municipality of Teupasenti

It is a municipality in the Department of El Paraíso, in the Republic of Honduras.

The first record of the place dates back to 1582, as stated in the report of the governor of the province, Alonso de Contreras Guevara, in which it appears as an indigenous town entrusted to Ana de Villalobos with 16 tributaries.

In 1791, it is mentioned as part of the curate of Danlí in the Olancho district. It was given the status of municipality on October 1, 1859, and in 1869, it came under the jurisdiction of the department of El Paraíso.

General Information about Teupasenti

Origin of its name: In Mesoamerican language, it means «temple.» It is said that the first chief was named Teopateti, which later evolved into Teupasenti.

Main Economic Activity

Cultivation of basic grains, coffee, sugarcane, and vegetables; breeding of cattle, horses, pigs, and goats; poultry farming.

Location

Located northwest of Danlí, it is surrounded by the La Esperanza and Neblinas mountains.

Limits

  • North: municipalities of Guaimaca (Francisco Morazán) and Campamento (Olancho);
  • South: municipalities of Morocelí and Jacaleapa;
  • East: municipality of Danlí;
  • West: municipalities of Morocelí, San Juan de Flores, and Guaimaca (the latter two in Francisco Morazán).

Hydrography: Rivers Jalan (tributary of the Patuca River), del Esquillal, Saladino, and San Juan.
