September 8 – International Literacy Day

The International Literacy Day was declared by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) on September 8, 1965, to raise awareness among the international community about the importance of literacy in individuals, communities, and societies.

The International Literacy Day, celebrated every September 8, is an opportunity for governments, civil society, and other stakeholders to highlight the progress made in global literacy rates and reflect on the remaining challenges in this field.

Literacy is a key component in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals within the framework of the Agenda 2030.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), approved by world leaders in September 2015, promote universal access to quality education and lifelong learning opportunities for all individuals.

In particular, one of the targets of Goal 4 is aimed at ensuring that all young people learn to read, write, and have basic numeracy skills, and that adults who lack these skills have the opportunity to acquire them.
