Municipality of El Paraíso

It is a municipality in the Department of El Paraíso, in the Republic of Honduras.

The date of its foundation is unknown. However, ethnological studies mention the indigenous people of El Paraíso. With the arrival of the Spanish, it was named Santa Clara, but later regained its original name and became an aldea (hamlet) under the jurisdiction of Danlí.

On March 22, 1874, it was given the status of a municipality. On February 1, 1880, it was granted the title of villa, and on May 15, 1959, it was elevated to the status of a city.

Origin of its name: Its name evokes the biblical place where creation originated.

Main Economic Activity

Cultivation of basic grains, sugarcane, citrus fruits, vegetables, and especially coffee, which is a heritage; breeding of cattle, horses, pigs, and rabbits.

Location

Located in the foothills of the Dipilto Range and bordering Nicaragua.
Hydrography: Conchagua River, Las Dificultades River, Guasure River, Manga Izquierda River, Namale River, Pescadero or Coscuteca River, and San Francisco River.

Limits

  • North: municipalities of San Matías and Danlí;
  • South: Republic of Nicaragua;
  • East: municipality of Danlí;
  • West: municipality of Alauca.
