Municipality of Sulaco

Sulaco is a municipality in the Department of Yoro in Honduras. The word «sulaco» means «In the land of quails» in Nahuatl.

Location

The municipality borders the municipality of Yorito to the north, the municipality of San José del Potrero to the south, the municipality of Marale to the east, and the municipality of Victoria to the west.

Historical Data

It is unknown when this municipality was created, but it is known that a convent of the Order of San Francisco was already established there in 1654. In the land title measurements during the Spanish colonial period, in 1707, it appears as San Juan de Sulaco, populated only by indigenous people. By 1723, this town had 200 inhabitants who were engaged in gold mining. In the first population count in 1791, it is listed as the curate’s head town. And in 1865, it had its first mayor, according to documents that have been found.
