Biography of Nelly Karina Jerez Caballero
As a Honduran professional, she is a doctor in Dental Surgery, graduated from the National Autonomous University of Honduras and with master’s studies in Medical Management from Tulane University in New Orleans, United States and as an Epidemiologist at the National Autonomous University of Honduras.
Her dedication and commitment to work led her to become a prominent deputy in the Sovereign National Congress of the Republic, reelected twice, where she served on important committees such as the Industry and Commerce Committee, the Women’s Committee, the Business Relations Committee, and the Tourism Committee.
Starting in January 2010, when she was appointed Secretary of State for Tourism, Dr. Jerez established her objectives and work strategy, focusing on enhancing the value of the country’s tourist attractions, developing demand and promoting investment, and creating a competitive environment. She based her actions on the National Strategy for Sustainable Tourism, which is promoted by the institution she leads, with the aim of strengthening Honduras in the tourism sector at a regional level, developing and diversifying its products and destinations.
In the past year, the Honduran Institute of Tourism, under the guidance of Minister Jerez, achieved remarkable progress, such as increased tourism tax revenue, growth in domestic, regional, and international tourism in the country, and the consolidation of Honduras as a business destination, among others.
El Heraldo newspaper, one of the most important newspapers in the country, described her in December 2010 as «one of the most proactive officials in President Porfirio Lobo Sosa’s government and the only woman on the list of the best-rated officials by El Heraldo.»
During President Juan Orlando Hernandez’s administration, she served as the National Deputy Commissioner for Risk Prevention at the Permanent Contingency Commission (Copeco).
In 2018, she was appointed as the new Undersecretary for Foreign Affairs for Consular and Migratory Affairs (Vice Minister of Honduras).
