Municipality of San Marcos de la Sierra

The municipality of San Marcos de la Sierra belongs to the Intibucá Department.

Initially known as the village of Guiranpu, belonging to the municipality of Yamaranguila, it was granted municipality status on March 16, 1901, under the presidency of Terencio Sierra, with the current name.

Origin of its name: It is a combination of a religious and geographical reference: «San Marcos» «de la Sierra.»

Main Economic Activity

Cultivation of basic grains, coffee, sugarcane, pineapple, and vegetables; raising of cattle, horses, and pigs; poultry farming.

Location

Located south of the municipality of Yamaranguila, surrounded by hills; it borders the Lempira Department.

Limits

  • North: Municipality of Yamaranguila
  • South: Municipalities of Concepcion and Colomoncagua
  • East: Municipalities of La Esperanza, Santa Elena, and Yarula (the last two in La Paz)
  • West: Municipality of San Francisco (Lempira)

Hydrography: Chinacla, Chucuara, Intibucá, and San Juan rivers.
