Municipality of Atima

Atima is a municipality in the department of Santa Barbara in Honduras.

It is a small town with a history dating back to pre-colonial times, but there is no information about its foundation or the origin of its name.

Location

Atima is a municipality located thirty-five kilometers south of the city of Santa Barbara. All the second-class roads converge in this place. Atima is situated in a small valley on the banks of the San José River.

Tourist Attractions

In its surroundings, there are natural treasures with great tourist potential, such as a 300-meter-high stone wall in front of Cerro «El Calichal.» There is also a set of caves known as the «Cuevas de Pencaligue.»
Another attraction is that the San José River in Atima abruptly disappears through a hole in the site called «El Embocadero» and re-emerges 1.8 km downstream in its underground course at a place called «El Desembocadero.»

The site is mentioned in some books like «En la órbita del final» and «El profundo mundo paralelo,» where the writer Licenciado Germán Alfaro develops one of his science fiction plots. «Crónicas y sueños» by Licenciado Adalid Martínez.

Economy

Atima is the largest producer of coffee among all the municipalities, as it is located in an elevated region suitable for coffee cultivation, making its production and flavor world-class.
One of the main problems affecting the development of this small municipality is the migration of its residents to large cities.
